Colony Launches New Platform Design
Colony comes out of beta with a streamlined new design and a host of new curatorial features
Last year our team ran a series of competitor review sessions where we looked at a range of VOD platforms from the perspective of product, brand, design, and user experience.
The findings from these sessions highlighted an opportunity to better communicate the uniqueness of our product (the special edition bundle), the diversity of our catalogue, and also to strengthen and consolidate our brand and design language both on and off platform.
Starting with a wire-framing workshop focused on our platform’s home page, we created a suite of new design elements (or “modules”) intended to address the aforementioned issues. I then had the pleasure of leading a visual design overhaul of the platform to bring these new elements to life whilst bringing existing elements into alignment with our current branding - particularly in terms of logo, colour palette and typography.
We feel we have created a clean and unique look for the platform, that is both immediately cinematic and engaging, whilst maintaining the friendly and welcoming feel that has been present in the brand from day one. In terms of content and user experience, the new design highlights the increasing breadth of our catalogue and lends itself to a curated experience. Users can now more easily find the content they are looking for, while effortlessly exploring, consuming and sharing our exclusive behind-the-scenes extras in a variety of new ways.
Building upon our innovative isomorphic platform architecture, we’ve been able to create a smooth and dynamic user experience that now feels more like a native application than a traditional website, while at the same providing numerous advantages in terms of performance and SEO.
Much of this work also lays the foundation for a suite of upcoming features which we hope will redefine the experience of watching film and film-related extras online.
We’re excited to share the new platform with our existing global user base and new visitors alike, so please head over to wearecolony.com to take a look, and feel free to share your thoughts with us here.
